“Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.” — Matthew 5:4
“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” — Psalm 34:18
Grief has always been given space in the life of faith. God comforts those who mourn (Matthew 5:4). In Scripture and in the Hebraic practice of sitting shiva, sorrow is not rushed toward resolution but honored through presence, stillness, and time. To remain with grief is not to lack faith, but to bear witness to love that has been deeply held and experienced.
God does not meet loss with distance or impatience. He does not ask for composure where there is ache, nor does He demand strength before its time. Throughout the story of Scripture, He is revealed as One who draws near to the brokenhearted, attentive to silence, memory, and tears (Psalm 34:18). Silence, remembrance, and lament are not foreign to Him, rather they are welcomed. He loves to meet us in our grief and sorrow and bring us comfort that only He can.
This nearness is most fully revealed in the humanity of Jesus. He did not stand outside grief as an observer. He entered it. He wept at the tomb of Lazarus, even knowing resurrection was near. He was acquainted with sorrow, betrayal, abandonment, and loss. In Jesus, we see a Father who does not bypass grief in order to redeem it, but one who walks through it with us. His tears affirm the weight of love and the reality of absence. Jesus shows us that grief is not a failure of faith, but the consequence of loving deeply in a broken world.
To grieve well is not to resolve sorrow quickly or to find meaning before its time. It is to remain present with what has been lost. To remember honestly with clarity. And bravely allow the soul its full expression of lament, longing, silence, and prayer. It is to sit, as generations before us have sat, trusting that God is near even when words are few. In this staying, grief becomes not something to conquer, but something to carry with reverence, held in the presence of a God who understands sorrow from the inside.
This candle came about 10 years after the sudden and untimely loss of my Mother. It has taken me many years to understand and process grief. I have helped many friends navigate through their personal losses over the years. But I could not bring myself to create just another product, rather waited on the Lord for the right time and place to release something that was not only birthed from personal pain, but also one that was so close to the Father. I pray you find healing and comfort with this candle, whether it is for yourself or for a loved one.
Shalom and Comfort to you,
